Happy Khmer New Year

Skateistan Cambodia celebrated the Khmer New Year (“Chaul Chnam Thmey”) with a fun-filled afternoon of traditional games, dance and DJ!

The Cambodian New Year holiday is based on the Buddhist calendar and lasts for three days marking the end of the harvesting season before the rainy season begins.

All our staff and youth leaders helped to organize the event, and students from all different Skateistan classes joined in the fun before spending the holiday with their families.

Tin and Pheakna, who both began as students almost 4 years ago and are now full-time Education and Sports Coordinators, led the event with a welcome speech. After that, everyone played a special balloon breaking game – the fastest pair to pop the balloon wins!

A number of other traditional games were played and the event concluded with Khmer style dancing, everyone’s favorite part of the day.

“Some students didn’t know each other before, but after the event they were friends. Everyone played together – they especially had fun dancing. It really improves their social life and opportunities to join in the community.”
