Skateistan was thrilled to hit the road this past weekend to take part in Khmarnival 2012 in Sihanoukville!
Eleven of our students from PSE (Pour un Souire d’Enfant) and 5 staff members crammed their bags, skateboards, safety gear, costumes, props, and smiles into the van for what promised to be a most memorable weekend.
The whole crew dressed up and participated in the march, skating in the streets promoting “Safety First” – the theme of the Carnival.
Time off was spent at the beach swimming, playing, and digging for crabs, eating fresh crustaceans, coconuts and mangos. On the last night students got to stay up past their bedtime and watch Phnom Penh’s very own Dub Addiction play center stage. Luckily the students knew all the words to their songs since Dub Addiction’s CD was one of only two compilations we had playing in the van for the entire trip!
On the way back the crew visited the Kbal Chhyay waterfalls for some fresh water relaxation before heading back home. The young skaters will have many memories to recall for years to come from this trip: dressing up as the superheroes they are; singing in unison in the van; shredding the streets of Sihanouville; dodging sting-rays in the ocean; temporarily “losing” our staff member Sochada while skating their first downhill, and most of all – the infamous ghost that haunted their sleeping quarters!
